LO SPAZIO NECESSARIO
A workshop of research and interaction with the images of the Ecomuseo Urbano Mare Memoria Viva archive in Palermo
Curated by Novella Oliana and Michela Palermo, in collaboration with Ecomuseo Mare Memoria viva and MINIMUM
LO SPAZIO NECESSARIO it’s a workshop focusing on archival photography considered as a place for reflecting on identity issues and on the representation of complex realities, determined by sudden transformations of the space and the territory.
Ecomuseo Mare Memoria Viva it’s an archive born with the aim of recomposing - through different contributions by several families from Palermo - the collective and private memory of the southern coastline of the city, brutally modified by urban demolitions and reconstructions in the 60s. One of the most evident consequence of this aggressive action is the increased distance between the sea and the city.
The aim of this workshop is to explore this distance by reflecting on a visual grammar that, starting from the work on/with the archival images, builds possible paths for private narration as well as for interaction with the others and the surrounding space. The intention is furthermore to focus on the vanishing power of images and on several major issues of contemporary photography. The relation between memory, image and place is the common thread for the creation of paper devices (fanzines, prints, small tridimensional structures), a result of the experimentation and the research on the particular meaning of this archive. Each device is the expression of a path and a map which takes different dimensions in the space and in the mind of each viewer.
